Description
  • This Totem Figure is a limited edition creation by Kevin Gadomski and his son Tanner. Each Totem Figure is hand signed, Dated and is a numbered edition. This is The Black Bear and is number 69 of 100 of this limited edition. Tanner’s native heritage is from the Turtle Clan of the Grand Portage Band of the Ojibway, on his mother’s side, whose grandmothers on both sides were full Anishinabe as well as his grandfather who was half Cree. Kevin and his son Tanner have signed and dated the Totem in 2010. The Black Bear Totem measures approximately 20 inches tall from the base of the Totem to the top fur above the Bears head.

  • The Ojibway believe every animal has its own individual fits and unique talents and power. Animals were chosen as personal totems by one who hoped to gain an animal’s special powers through emulating that animal’s behavior and characteristics. Animals have the ability to sense the changes of the world, the seasonal changes and the coming of things.

  • Long ago there was a man and woman who wanted to wed but the families did not agree. The man and woman secretly moved to the forest together rather than to return and be separated. One winter the man had to return home and decided to make the journey alone. He was gone many years and the woman was lost. As the years passed, she met the Chief of the Bears. The Chief of the Bears made a flute song that he would play to her which would put her under his power. She married Chief of the Bears and had two sons and lived in a large cedar tree. After many years, the man found the woman and wanted to bring her home. She said “I cannot go with you until my husband, the Chief of the Bears, returns”. But the man talked her into it and she left before speaking to her husband or talking to her children. Although she was home and no longer under the spell she was worried for her two sons and wished to return them but she was not allowed. As for the two sons, they became different as they grew up. One son returned to his mother and her people the other son stayed with his fathers family. Out of respect for his father, he ensures the song is passed through the ages.
