Kevin and his son Tanner have signed and dated the Totem in 2011. The Black Wolf Totem measures approximately 20 3/4 inches tall from the base of the Totem to the top of the spear.
The Ojibway believe every animal has its own individual fits and unique talents and power. Animals were chosen as personal totems by one who hopes to gain an animals special powers through emulating that animals behavior and characteristics. Animals have the ability to sense the changes of the world, the seasonal changes and the coming of things.
Long ago, there was a Brave who was in prayer to the Great Spirit. His heart was heavy in sorrow because of a great winter famine that enclosed upon his village. Many of the Elders and children could not withstand such conditions and sadly many of them perished. To save the village from famine, the warrior prayed late into the night to the Great Spirit thanking the Great Spirit for all the blessings brought before. The Brave being the only person awake could hear a noise across the river which sounded like a wolf crying in distress. Filled with compassion, the warrior rowed across the river and walked up to a wolf and found that wolf had a bone lodged in its throat. The Warrior removed the bone and told the wolf you are free to go my brother. When the next evening came, the whole village could hear the unmistakable howling of an entire pack of hungry wolves across the river. The next morning a party of Braves went across the river to investigate. When they reach the other side they found the bank full of fresh deer meat placed there by the wolves for the entire Indian village. One wolf walked forward to the Brave that had saved him and said this is in gratitude for your great dead, go forth my brother and feed your village. This is why Wolves and Braves are considered warriors and defenders of the tribe. Wolves and Braves are considered to have courage and great perseverance offering guardianship to those that need it. This Wolf is dressed ready for battle with shield and weapons to give strength and power in battle.
