  • The principal part of the traditional squash blossom necklace is the Naja. It is believe that the Southwestern Indians first saw this ornament on the horse bridles of the Spanish Conquistadors in the late 1500s and early 1600s. Captured or traded, these ornaments soon graced the necks of the local Native Americans. Their acquisition was a matter of pride, and as the generations came and went, the najahe or naja became symbolic and was associated through ceremony with crop fertility. The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead is yo ne maze disya gi, which means simply, bead that spreads out.

  • The term Pawn refers to selling jewelry or other personal items for cash. It can also mean exchanging jewelry or other personal items for cash by using the item as collateral for a loan. If the piece used for collateral is not claimed by an agreed upon date, then the item becomes Dead Pawn and the pawn shop becomes the owner of the item and can choose to sell the item to reclaim the cost of the money lent. The term Dead Pawn does not indicate the age of the jewelry. Dead Pawn jewelry can be very old, newly made or anywhere in between.
