Description
This is a beautiful Zuni hand carved Corn Maiden Fetish by talented Artists Terrence and Jessica Martza. This collector item work of art is carved from Fishrock and features Ten Corn Maidens carved as if from the walls of a Southwestern Butte. Six of the Corn Maidens include a Sunface Necklace comprised of Turquoise, Coral, Mother of Pearl and Polished Jet. The remaining Corn Maidens have necklaces of Silver, and Turquoise. This piece also features two corn baskets with the fruits of the harvest artistically shown as Turquoise Stone Chips. Throughout this piece are etchings, Silver, Turquoise and Coral and Polished Jet. This collector work of art is clearly signed by the Zuni Artists noted as Terrence -N- Jessica Martza.
The Fetish measures approximately 6 1/4 inches tall at its tallest point and is 10 3/4 inches in circumference as measured around the base.
Zuni fetishes are hand-carved objects, which represent the spirits of animals or the forces of nature. The earliest fetishes are called Ahlashiwe or stone ancients by the Zunis. They were naturally formed stones that seemed to resemble people or animals, sometimes made more realistic with the features accentuated by a carver. Zunis believe that animals, as well as inanimate objects and the forces of nature, have a spirit force. It is believed that the carved animal fetishes host that spiritual force and, if treated properly, will help their owners to overcome the problems facing them.
The Corn Maiden represents strength, creation, and wisdom. In Zuni, the Sunface is a very important deity. A powerful symbol of peace and positive energy and represents the bringer of new life and new beginnings.
