Description
This is a beautiful Santo Domingo Bracelet by noted artist Lorraine Cate of the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico. The bracelet features Kingman Mine Turquoise and Red Coral and Sterling Silver clasps.
The bracelet measures approximately 8 1/2 inches from clasp to clasp.
Lorraine creates all of her beads by hand. Raw materials are sliced into raw shapes to begin the process. A small hole is made in each which is strung on fine wire where they are ground into the desired shape. The final beads are smoothed with fine grades of sandpaper. The beads are then washed in clear water, dried in the healing sun of the Santo Domingo Pueblo and polished to a high shine.
Lorraine Cate of the Santa Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico was the Indian Arts and Crafts Association Artist of the Year for 2003 and has also been a recognized as best in show at the annual Santa Fe Indian Market. As early as five years old, Lorraine showed an interest in making jewelry. Her mother Irma and grandmother Crucita fostered this interest to ensure the continuation of the artistry that is part of their life and culture. Lorraine contributes her success to her mother who taught her to make each piece as if it were her own. To make each piece something that will be treasured for a lifetime. Lorraine is most proud of her IACA 2003 award. She sees this as not only recognition for her work, but for all the fine artists of the Santo Domingo Pueblo who continue to make beautiful jewelry from the raw materials to the finished work of art. She hopes that the award will be an inspiration to the young artists on the Pueblo to keep the tradition alive.
