  • This is a beautifully Zuni hand crafted Turtle Fetish by Zuni Artist Fabian Homer. This work of art is hand carved from Serpentine with a carved Shell back and inlay Jet eyes. The Turtle also has a Sunface comprised on Coral, Jet, Turquoise and Mother of Pearl. The fetish is signed by the Zuni Artist noted as F Homer and is also signed Zuni NM. The Fetish measures approximately 1/2 inch tall and is approximately 1 1/4 inch long. Total weight of this piece is 8.3 grams.

  • Zuni fetishes are hand-carved objects, which represent the spirits of animals or the forces of nature. The earliest fetishes are called Ahlashiwe or stone ancients by the Zunis. They were naturally formed stones that seemed to resemble people or animals, sometimes made more realistic with the features accentuated by a carver. Zunis believe that animals, as well as inanimate objects and the forces of nature, have a spirit force. It is believed that the carved animal fetishes host that spiritual force and, if treated properly, will help their owners to overcome the problems facing them.

  • The Turtle is a symbol of Mother Earth and embodies self-reliance, tenacity and longevity. The Turtle also represents patience, courage and protection from the elements and other protective needs in ones life. In Zuni, the Sunface is a very important deity. A powerful symbol of peace and positive energy and represents the bringer of new life and new beginnings.
